Ortho-K utilizes precise instrumentation to accurately determine the corneal shape before treatment.The corneal topographer "maps" the eye using thousands of points. The topographer enables the ortho-k doctor to design the lens for each eye instead of using "stock" lenses. These topographic maps or pictures are used to determine if the corneal shape is changing in the correct manner. The typical post-treatment map shows a central red ring (steepened area) surrounding the flattened area. This flat area must be centered over the pupil to provide maximum benefit.
Throughout your initial fitting period, your Orthokeratologist will monitor your corneal health and the effectiveness of treatment. At certain times your retainer lens fit may be modified to achieve your goals.
Orthokeratology can produce results in a surprisingly short period of time. The length of treatment to achieve your goals can vary from patient to patient. Factors which can affect the speed of treatment include:
- your initial prescription
- corneal rigidity
- tear quality and quantity
- your expectations.
We advise patients that they may need to use their retainers every night to maintain their newly corrected vision although some patients are able to vary their wearing time to once every two to four nights. The reason for this is due to the flexibility of your cornea.

ORTHO-K. There is a lot to talk about. How about I start with how it feels. If you want to know it is there you can roll your eyes up and feel the outline. I recommend putting them on just before you go to bed (mainly so you don’t feel the outline while watching T.V.). Secondly, I will inform you how much better you’ll see. Your eye vision will be remarkable. It’ll make you feel like the sun has kissed your eyes making you feel younger and more active. Woo hoo for ORTHO-K!!!!!
